Programme Aims

This 45 credit programme aims to equip individuals with well-developed skills and knowledge necessary to sustain the capacity, quality, and safety of civil infrastructure work.  The flexible format of delivery involving class contact and self-paced workbooks aims to support those already working in the highway construction, civil contracting and infrastructure areas.

 

The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is the NZQA accredited provider of the programme, with course delivery carried out by the New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology (NZIHT). NZIHT is a fully self-managing subsidiary of WITT.  All academic processes associated with programme delivery, assessment and results reporting are carried out in accordance with WITT’s Quality Management Systems.

Graduate Profile

Graduates will have well developed knowledge and skills relating to civil construction and infrastructure.  These include the ability to (dependent upon electives selected):

  •  Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and safety, emergency response, legislation at civil infrastructure sites, safety observer responsibilities, and work safely with others – (Civil Workplace Knowledge Part A and Part B)
  • Operate as a Traffic Controller (Traffic Controller)
  • Operate as a Site Traffic Management Supervisor for Level 1 roads (Site Traffic Management Supervisor)
  • Respond to fire incidents (Fire Response)
  • Handle bituminous materials safely (Handling Bituminous Materials)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of  the infrastructure industry (Introduction to the Infrastructure Industry)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of large plant operations (Large Plant Operations)
  • Read practical texts, read and interpret graphs and use standard units of measurement (Literacy and Numeracy)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pavement construction (Quality Pavement Construction)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of slinging, lifting, and placing with an excavator or loader (Slinging, Lifting, and Placing
  • Read and interpret civil construction plans, and assist with survey and set out (Survey and Set Out)

Entry Criteria

Entry is open to those persons working in the civil construction, infrastructure or highway engineering, construction or maintenance areas.

Birth Certificate or Passport verification of New Zealand Citizenship or NZ Permanent Residency is necessary for enrolment into this programme.

Programme Length

This is a 20-week part-time programme.

Delivery is by blended methodologies, with an average of four contact/study days throughout the delivery period, supported learning within the workplace, self-directed learning via workbooks, group and individual projects.

Programme Delivery Format

COMPULSORY COURSES (25 WITT credits)

Civil Workplace Knowledge – Part A (2 days - 20 credits

  • 497 Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements

  • 20868 Demonstrate knowledge of emergency response in the civil infrastructure industry 
  • 20870 Describe protection of health, safety and environment in the civil infrastructure industry 
  • 20873 Demonstrate knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation at civil infrastructure sites 
     

Traffic Controller (1 day - 5 credits

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management to meet NZTA Level 1 Basic - Traffic Controller requirements
  • 20877 Demonstrate knowledge of working safely at sites under temporary traffic management 
  • 5627 Operate as a Traffic Controller (TC) for low volume and Level 1 roads 
  • 20878 Assist with temporary traffic management for low volume and Level 1 roads

Civil Workplace Knowledge – Part B (2 days - 20 credits)

  • Demonstrate knowledge on the type of fire extinguishers suitable for use on bitumen fires and demonstrate the use of a fire extinguisher

  • 20456 Demonstrate first aid relating to liquid bitumen and bitumen additives  

 

Introduction to the Infrastructure Industry (1 day - 10 credits)

Site Traffic Management Supervisor (2 days - 5 credits)

  • 5628 Operate as a Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) for low volume and Level 1 roads 

 

Slinging, Lifting, and Placing (1 day - 5 credits)  

  • 20875 Demonstrate knowledge of slinging, lifting, and placing with an excavator or loader 

 

Survey and Set Out (1 day - 5 credits)

  • 6476 Read and interpret civil construction plans
  • 6480 Assist with survey and set-out on civil construction works 

Programme Fee

The fee for domestic students (NZ citizens and NZ permanent residents) is $100 + GST* for the programme. The fee for international students is available on request.

An intake will be subject to sufficient enrolments in each course.

* This fee is only available for NZ Citizens or Permanent Residents of NZ who supply a copy of their verified birth certificate or passport.
