Programme Aims and Objectives

This 52 credit programme aims to develop skills and knowledge for those exploring their options in contracting occupations and associated trades before deciding on a more defined career direction. The programme is relevant to pre-apprenticeship training programmes in civil infrastructure maintenance and construction, or work experience placement programmes.
The introductory programme can be completed in 20 weeks and requires attendance at five block courses (i.e. total of eight days off-job training). Trainees must also complete specified workplace experience tasks plus self-paced study and unit standard evidence workbooks.
 

The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is the NZQA accredited provider of the programme, with course delivery carried out by the New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology (NZIHT). NZIHT is a fully self-managing subsidiary of WITT.  All academic processes associated with programme delivery, assessment and results reporting are carried out in accordance with WITT’s Quality Management Systems.

Graduate Profile

On achieving this qualification gradates will have a range of basic skills and knowledge relating to highway construction and civil works and services fields including:

  • Basic first aid
  • Civil contracting
  • Personal and life skills
  • Civil construction drawing
  • Temporary traffic management

Entry Criteria

Entry is open to those persons working in the civil construction, infrastructure or highway engineering, construction or maintenance industries.

This programme is only available to New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents of NZ.

Programme Length

Eight (8) days off job (in class) plus self-directed study in the workplace over a 20 week period. Time is spent mostly in the workplace. Block course attendance required as stated in delivery format.

Programme Delivery Format

The National Certificate in Civil Infrastructure (General Introductory Skills) is delivered over a 20 week period via a mixture of block course training and self-directed study within the work place.

All courses are compulsory

BLOCK ONE : Basic Worksite Knowledge 
Attend TWO (2) days off-job training followed by self-directed study

  • 1978 Identify and describe basic employment rights and responsibilities, and sources of information and assistance. 
  • 6453 Demonstrate knowledge of civil construction works. 
  • 12382 Describe the significance of one’s work within an employing organisation. 
  • 17592 Identify the causes of back injury and methods to prevent back injuries in the workplace. 
  • 17593 Apply safe work practices in the workplace. 
  • 22283 Identify the occupational areas and structures associated with the NZ civil infrastructure industry. 

 

BLOCK TWO: Health and Safety for Civil Construction 

Attend TWO (2) days off-job training followed by self-directed study

  • 6475 Maintain records for civil construction work. 
  • 17327 Communicate on civil construction sites. 
  • 20868 Demonstrate knowledge of emergency response in the civil infrastructure industry.
  • 20870 Describe protection of health, safety and environment in the civil infrastructure industry. 
  • 20873 Demonstrate knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation at civil infrastructure sites. 

 

BLOCK THREE : First Aid 

Attend ONE (1) day off-job training

  • 6401 Provide first aid 
  • 6402 Provide resuscitation level 2 

 

BLOCK FOUR : Survey and Set Out 

Attend TWO (2) days off-job training followed by self-directed study

  • 6476 Read and interpret civil construction plans. 
  • 6480 Assist with survey and set-out on civil construction works. 

 

BLOCK FIVE : Traffic Management 

Attend ONE (1) day off-job training followed by self-directed study

  • 5627 Operate as a Traffic Controller (TC) for low volume and Level 1 roads. 
  • 20877 Demonstrate knowledge of working safely at sites under temporary traffic management. 
  • 20878 Assist in temporary traffic management site closure for Level 2 and 3 roads. 

Programme Fee

The fee for domestic students (NZ citizens and NZ permanent residents) is $120+ GST for the five blocks *conditions apply.

* This fee is only available for NZ Citizens or Permanent Residents of NZ who supply a copy of their verified birth certificate or passport.
