Bitumen - Basic Safety

Overview

It is absolutely essential that all those involved in any way with bituminous materials fully understand the significant hazards presented and the procedures used to ensure safety.

This is an essential awareness course for anybody involved in any way with the road surfacing industry and is presented with the aid of graphic practical demonstrations. A special variation of this course "Bitumen - Managing the Risk" is designed specifically for senior managers, engineers and supervisors.

It is a pre-requisite for other advanced courses for those handling, working near, operating or maintaining bitumen equipment or supervising the use of bituminous materials. 

This course will assist with compliance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

On completion of this course participants will

  • Identify basic hazards associated with bitumen and hotmix road surfacing.
  • Identify specific hazards and safety procedures associated with the handling, blending, transportation and spraying of bitumen
  • Recognise hazards involved in the maintenance and repair of bitumen equipment
  • Know procedures for fire-fighting with extinguishers.
  • Administer first aid for bitumen burns and chemical burns.

National Qualification information

Attendance at this one day course will deliver the theoretical knowledge of the following unit standards. Assessment of two of these unit standards is available (20455 and 20456) – refer to cost schedule for details. Note that the full completion of assessment documents will be required within 6 weeks after the training.

  • 1495 (expiring) - Demonstrate knowledge of the dangers of bitumen handling and the need for safety
  • 3271 Suppress fire with hand extinguishers and fixed hose reels
  • 20455  Demonstrate basic knowledge of safety relating to bituminous materials
  • 20456  Demonstrate first aid relating to liquid bitumen and bitumen additives

Who should attend

All personnel involved in any way with road surfacing, especially those working anywhere in contractor's depots, chipsealing and asphalt paving workers, as well as those managing or supervising road surfacing operations including local authority and consulting engineering personnel.

Optional Unit Standard Assessment Fee

$105.00 per person + GST

This optional fee is for the assessment of two unit standards only 20455 and 20456 reported to NZQA. This fee is in addition to the cost of the course. Participants must complete a workbook with theory and practical components. The assessment workbook will be given out at the course and must be returned to NZIHT within six weeks from the course date.
Each person must complete a WITT enrolment form and provide a copy of their birth certificate or passport.
