Level 1 Basic Traffic Controller (TC)
Overview
This one day course promotes safe working practices, standards and operating procedures at roadwork sites.
This is the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Level 1 Basic Traffic Controller (TC), which covers the standards and operating procedures required by the Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management (COP/TTM).
Appropriately trained and qualified staff must be available to carry out temporary traffic management duties in compliance with the NZTA COP/TTM and Local Roads supplement on all worksites.
This course is the pre-requisite for entry requirement for people wanting further training to Level 1 Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) standard of the Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management.

On completion of this course participants will

Assist the STMS in the setting up of roadwork sites in accordance with approved Traffic Management Plans
-
Develop a consistent approach to traffic control
-
Analyse Traffic Management Plans in relation to various roading situations

Apply exercises in the planning and setting up of roadwork sites to actual roading situations
-
Understand the requirements for sign selection, placement, safe operating procedures and worksite protection for Level 1 roads

Understand and apply the standards for Local Roads

National Qualification information
This course will address theoretical and knowledge requirements related to the below unit standards. Optional assessment of these unit standards is available – refer to cost schedule for details. Note that the full completion of assessment documents will be required within six weeks after the training

Who should attend
Any person that carries out work on or within the boundaries of a road. These include NZTA State Highways and Local Authority roads.

Optional Unit Standard Assessment Fee

$90 +GST Full assessment of unit standards 5627, 20877 and 20878
This optional fee is for the assessment of unit standards and reporting to NZQA. Participants must complete a workbook with theory and practical components. As part of this assessment students must have access to a suitable road works site to complete all practical tasks. The assessment workbook will be given out at the course and must be returned to NZIHT within six weeks from the course date.
Each person must complete a WITT enrolment form and provide a copy of their birth certificate or passport.
Note: assessment of unit standards is not necessary to ‘pass’ the course and receive your NZTA registration.
