Refresher - Level 1 STMS

Overview

Registration for Level 1 Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) expires at the end of three years, at which time you will need to attend a one-day refresher course to regain this qualification.

This course provides training of the major changes to the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management (COP/TTM). Including, low volume roads, local body roads, change in responsibilities, safety audit procedure, mobile operations and generic plans.

  • $40 + GST   NZTA Registration fee is an additional to the course fee. This NZTA registration fee is necessary to enable you to be registered as a STMS.

On completion of this course participants will

  • recognise and understand the changes to the Code of Practice
  • apply the criteria for low volume roads
  • delegate responsibility for the worksite to a registered TC
  • relate Code of Practice standards to participants; actual work site and developing practical options
  • apply generic plans
  • apply the changes for mobile operations
  • brief the work team about site traffic management
  • identify and control traffic and other hazards
  • understand the responsibilities following the amendment to the HASIE Act
  • set up, check and maintain work site protection measures
  • carry out or assist in making safety audits of work sites.
  • Understand the format of the local roads supplement to COPTTM

National Qualification information

Attendance at this one day course will deliver the theoretical knowledge of the following unit standards. Assessment of these unit standards is available - refer to cost schedule for details. Note that full completion of assessment documents will be required within six weeks after the training

  • 5627 - Operate as a Traffic Controller (TC) for low volume and Level 1 roads
  • 5628 - Operate as a Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) for low volume and Level 1 roads
  • 20877 - Demonstrate knowledge of working safely at sites under temporary traffic management
  • 20878 - Assist with temporary traffic management for low volume and Level 1 roads

Who should attend

Any person who is registered on the NZTA database as a ‘Level 1 Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS)’ with their qualification about to expire.

Optional Unit Standard Assessment Fee

  • $150 +GST : Full assessment of unit standards 5627, 5628, 20877, 20878

This optional fee is for the assessment of unit standards and reporting to NZQA. Participants must complete a workbook with theory and practical components.  As part of this assessment students must have access to a suitable road works site to complete all practical tasks. The assessment workbook will be given out at the course and must be returned to NZIHT within six weeks from the course date.
Each person must complete a WITT enrolment form and provide a copy of their birth certificate or passport.

Note: assessment of unit standards is not necessary to ‘pass’ the course and receive your NZTA registration.

NZTA requires that you must hold a NZTA Level 1 STMS qualification (expired no longer than one year). Please provide your NZTA Photo ID card number on your registration form.
