The operation of bitumen tankers, sprayers, bitumen storage and blending plants demands a sound knowledge of the properties of bitumen and associated products and adherence to strict safety procedures. Production is improved if operators have the appropriate advanced knowledge and skill to accurately and safely use plant and equipment. Quality is maintained by bitumen product knowledge, adherence to handling procedures, accurate blend and calculation and careful record keeping. This course is designed as a "follow-on" from the awareness level Bitumen Safety course specifically for hands-on operators.

National Qualification information:
This course will address theoretical and knowledge requirements related to the below unit standards. It will not cover assessment and practical requirements unless specifically stated under course costs. 20443 Operate bitumen storage and heating equipment at an asphalt plant
20449 Demonstrate knowledge of the dangers of handling bituminous materials and the need for safety
20450 Describe safe heating, blending, modification, and transfer of bulk bituminous liquids
20458 Describe placarding requirements and produce documentation for transporting bituminous materials
20459 Transport bulk bituminous liquids by road and assist with loading and unloading
20460 Operate a bitumen tank wagon
20463 Determine and document bitumen blends
1496 (expiring) Demonstrate knowledge of bitumen materials, their
modification and handling on chipsealing works

Presenter Information:
Barry Gundersen has over 38 years engineering and management experience in the road surfacing industry on both sides of the Tasman. He was National Technical Manager for Bitumix (NZ) for 15 years before setting up his own consultancy in 1995, specialising in road surfacings. Barry has been a visiting lecturer at Auckland University for 12 years and also runs training courses for the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association.
Pre-requisite for attendance:
Participants must have completed the Bitumen Safety course (within the last five years) prior to attending this course. Participants must complete the Bitumen Tanker & Plant Operator course prior to attending the Bitumen Sprayer Operator course.
