The concept of this course is to take operators in the field and upskill them to better understand the requirements of the civil industry and to give the operator a stepping stone towards the role of the Foreperson. This course is designed to give operators a better understanding of the requirements that may be placed on them from the Project Manager and Foreperson on site. It will also assist the operator upskill to a point where they are more able to help the Foreperson and Project Managers on a day to day basis. This is a classroom based course and has no practical machine content included.

- Plan reading
- Set out from plan to construction site
- Recording data
- Staff control and organising staff workloads
- Job site forward planning
- Compaction and testing methods
- Maintenance and reporting on machinery
- Health and Safety on the worksite
On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:
- Read and understand plans
- Set out work from plans on the job site
- Be able to record data and information from the site
- Be able to organise staff into job operations
- Be able to look and understand how forward planning is carried out
- Have a good understanding of compaction and testing methods
- Organise and fill out a machinery maintenance report
- Have an understanding of health and safety on the worksite
National Qualification information:
his course will address theoretical and knowledge requirements related to the below unit standards. It will not cover assessment and practical requirements unless specifically stated under course costs. 6454 (expiring) Demonstrate knowledge of safety principles and maintain safety on civil construction works 6476 Read and interpret civil construction plans 7744 (expiring) Maintain foreperson records for civil construction works 8559 (expiring) Apply foreperson leadership and communication skills on civil construction site. 22992 Demonstrate knowledge of field sampling for testing of civil construction materials

Excavator and machine operators who are working currently on civil and earthworks sites, having had experience in the operation of the machinery usually found on a civil site. Those wanting a stepping stone to the role of Foreperson; those who are new to the role of Foreperson and are looking to increase their knowledge and training. Also those from smaller companies wanting training to a more productive role within that company.
