Road Lighting Course A - to AS/NZS 1158

1 day Course
Presenter: Graeme Culling and Mike Jacket

The New Zealand road lighting series of standards is continually being updated. The updates make several changes, which are relatively small overall, but key ones in terms of environmental protection, maintenance, and observer position luminance analysis. The results recognise changes in trends internationally and incorporate user feedback on the original publications. The overall effect on road and pedestrian area lighting designs is small but subtle and it is important that designers and asset owners understand these. A new part (1158.4 Lighting of Pedestrian Crossings) has been produced (June 2009).

Additional small revisions have been proposed and these have now been published (2009). The 2010 course material will address these revisions and the new standard.

This one day course covers the series of AS/NZS 1158 Road Lighting Standards. The design of lighting for vehicle and pedestrian road users is covered as well as historical reasoning behind "why we light roads". It allows users to gain full advantage from the broad guidance they now provide. The course will cover the elements of good road lighting design for all parts of the road network using the computer techniques specified in the standard.

Topics include:

  • Outline of the new issue standards
  • Photometric issues and principles
  • Field measurements
  • Safety benefits
  • Developing a lighting hierarchy
  • The design method
  • The basics of design methods
  • Elements of good design
  • The road lighting asset and key measures to minimise lifetime costs
  • Specific case studies (if submitted by the attendees)

On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:

  • Knowledge of Public Road Lighting Standards and their application to Public Lighting Tasks
  • Knowledge of the model behind the calculation of the light technical paramaters for the various lighting levels in Category V and Category P
  • A basic knowledge of the design principles in completing any public lighting design tasks (with emphasis on road lighting)
  • An appreciation of the content and rules within the Standards and committee reasoning for them

Who Should Attend:

Engineers and designers from local road controlling authorities, traffic and design engineers from consultants and architects involved in the design of road lighting for vehicle and pedestrian traffic

Cost:

$405.00 per person + GST

Presenter Information:

Graeme Culling
(BE, CPEng, MIPENZ, M.I.L.E., M.I.E.S)

Lighting & Power Products Engineer Betacom (1988) Ltd (Now incorporating Gough Technology) Graeme is a registered engineer and has been involved with the design, testing (mechanical, electrical, and photometric) and production of road lighting luminaires for over 30 years. He is a member of the joint Australia/New Zealand Road lighting committee that produced the 1158 series of standards.

Mike Jackett (BSc. M.Eng.Sc)
Consultant traffic engineer based in Wellington, ex Regional Engineer for LTSA. He has approximately 30 years experience in road safety engineering and has had an active interest in road lighting over that time. He is a current member of the joint Australia/New Zealand Standards Committee and of CIE division 4.

Night Tour:

An optional night tour is available on the evening of this course. This tour of road lighting installations will take approximately two hours, commencing at dusk. Participants will get to see examples of both good and not so good installations. An additional charge of $50 + GST per person is payable for the night tour.
