This is an essential awareness course targeted at senior managers, engineers and supervisors involved in managing the risks associated with road surfacing or similar site works that involve the use of bitumen. It is absolutely essential that all those involved in managing or supervising an operation or business involving bituminous materials and related plant and equipment, fully understand the significant hazards presented, the legislative requirements imposed and the procedures required to adequately manage the many risks involved. The one day course will be presented with the aid of graphic practical demonstrations and is designed to help managers meet Health and Safety compliance and ensure good self-governance industry practice as required by the Roading New Zealand "Operate Safe" scheme and ACC.

- Importance of appropriate training
- Hazards of bitumen plants and hot-mix plants
- Hazards associated with field operations
- Dangers of water
- Managing bitumen burns and chemical burns incidents
- Dangerous goods - management responsibilities
- Explosion hazards, empty tank hazards
- Maintenance hazards, spillage precautions
- Managing fire risk
- Miscellaneous associated hazards encountered in the road surfacing industry
On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:
- Identify basic hazards associated with bitumen and hotmix asphalt activities
- Identify specific hazards and safety procedures associated with the handling, blending, transportation and spraying of bitumen and the production and laying of hot-mix asphalt.
- Recognise hazards involved in the maintenance and repair of bitumen equipment, especially tanks and tankers.
- Understand procedures for fire-fighting with extinguishers
- Understand the principles of managing a bitumen burns incident and the first aid treatment for bitumen burns and chemical burns
National Qualification information:
This course will address theoretical and knowledge requirements related to the below unit standards. It will not cover assessment and practical requirements unless specifically stated under course costs. 20455 Demonstrate basic knowledge of safety relating to bituminous materials 20456 Demonstrate first aid relating to liquid bitumen and bitumen additives

This fee applies to people who attend a course for knowledge only purposes with no intention of gaining unit standard credits towards a qualification. WITT SUBSIDISED OPTION - $160 +GST course attendance fee* including assessment of unit standard 20455 only reported to NZQA *Conditions apply.
*To be eligible for a fee subsidy a course participant must provide evidence of NZ Citizenship or Permanent Residence. Each person must: - Complete a WITT enrolment form and provide a copy of their NZ Birth Certificate or passport prior to the course date. - Comlete an assessment workbook with theory and practical components. This workbook will be given out at the course and must be returned to NZIHT within six weeks from the course date. If the above conditions are not met, the full course fee will be charged.
