GradDip(Highways) pre-requisite:

This course is designed to give prospective students an adequate level and breadth of knowledge in Geomechanics sufficient to meet the entry requirements for the NZIHT Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Highways). Other technical people working in areas related to earthworks and civil engineering may find this course useful to broaden their knowledge at an undergraduate level (i.e. NZQA Level 6 equivalent).




Topics include:

  • Engineering Properties of Soils
  • Soil Composition
  • Soil Grading (particle size distribution)
  • Soil Plasticity
  • Soil Classification
  • Shear Strength
  • In-situ testing



On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:

  • Identify Engineering Properties of Soils
  • Interpret Soil Test results
  • Interpret the Unified Classification System
  • Evaluate a range of in-situ test procedures



Who Should Attend:

Persons who require a basic understanding of soil testing procedures and interpretation of soil testing data, especially those interested in a taster course before committing to further study at Bachelor or Graduate Diploma in Engineering level.
