Survey and Set Out - Stage 1

This is a practical course to enable front line field staff to read and interpret plans and assist with survey and setting out activities. 

This introductory stage focuses on developing an understanding of fundamental set out methods for civil work sites, including roading projects, and includes field exercises in checking and using levelling equipment. 

The course starts with an explanation of plans and existing services and leads to survey observations, measurements, recording and reduction of levels.

Further advanced applications are offered in stage 2.




Topics include:

  • Understanding plans and symbols
  • Interpreting constraints and services
  • Explaining survey and set out equipment
  • Use of levels, digital grade level, tapes and laser levels
  • Set out of pegs, profiles, batter boards and stakes
  • Location of services
  • Reading, recording and reducing level observations
  • Construction site survey considerations
  • Area and volume calculations.



On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:

  • Set up, read, record and calculate using a level
  • Assist a surveyor with planning and preparation work for survey setout
  • Assist a surveyor to take field measurements
  • Understand construction drawings and their functions
  • Locate and identify features on construction drawings
  • Investigate services and mark and record them.



National Qualification information:

Attandance at this one day course will deliver the theoretical knowledge of the following unit standards. Assessment of these unit standards is available - refer to cost schedule for details. Note that the full completion of assessment documents will be required within six weeks after the training.
6476 Read and interpret civil construction plans
6480  Assist with survey and set-out on civil construction works


Who Should Attend:

Forepersons, plant operators, technicians, field staff who are required to assist in the set out and maintenance of civil work sites including road works.


Cost:

FULL COURSE FEE

  • $450 +GST course attendance fee only

This is the course attendance fee for people who just wish to attend the one day course and not gain any unit standard credits.

 

WITT SUBSIDISED OPTION

  • $220 +GST  course attendance fee* including full assessment of unit standards 6476 and 6480 reported to NZQA *conditions apply
This subsidised option is only available to NZ Citizens or Permanent Residents of NZ who supply the necessary enrolment information. It includes the full assessment of unit standards 6476 and 6480. Subject to available funding.

*To be eligible for a fee subsidy a course participant must provide evidence of NZ Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
Each person must:
- Complete a WITT enrolment form and provide a copy of their NZ Birth Certificate or passport prior to the course date.
- Comlete an assessment workbook with theory and practical components. This workbook will be given out at the course and must be returned to NZIHT within six weeks from the course date.
If the above conditions are not met, the full course fee will be charged.




Presenter Information:

John Hermann is a licensed surveyor with 25 years practical experience in civil engineering, surveying and property management. He is currently involved in surveying projects throughout New Zealand, specialising in a wide variety of roading, petrochemical, subdivision and easement surveys. John has presented surveying and set out courses to surveyors, engineers, roading staff and students. He enjoys surfing the Taranaki coastal spots when not following rugby.
