PIPE LAYING, TRENCHING, BEDDING AND BACKFILLING Good drainage is one of the key factors in continuing performance of many civil engineering structures including road pavements. Each drainage system has its own particular installation and maintenance requirements. Whether undertaken by hand or machine, attention to detail is important.

- Types and functions of drainage systems
- Culvert and pipe installation (site preparation, trenching, laying and joining pipes, backfilling and testing)
- Subsoil drainage systems
- Possible improvement to inadequate drainage
- Maintenance procedure (blockages, breakages, inspection and repair)
- Reinstating pavement after repairs
- Open water channels
- Scour and fluming repairs
- Replacement of damaged drainage systems

- Lay and join pipes and carry out testing

- Repair piped drainage systems up to two metres in diameter
