Road signage, edge marker posts, sight and guard rails are a significant asset in the roading network.
Installation and maintenance of these roadside items can be time consuming because of: difficult ground conditions, problems with supply of materials and site organisation, inefficient assembly, inappropriate positioning, poor sight distances, obstructions and location errors.
This introductory level course is aimed at giving field staff a basic understanding of the background requirements of such work, as well as developing good work practices and skills to reduce costs.
Topics include:
- Programming, erection and maintenance
- Plant, equipment and material selection
- Setting out/positioning of posts
- Excavation using various techniques
- Installation of posts and rails
- Site safety practices during installation and maintenance
- Sight distance, visibility, trimming of vegetation, spacing and height requirements
- Setting out signs/posts and delineators
- Cleaning, repairing and refurbishing of signs and marker posts
- Installation and maintenance of roadside amenities
- Maintenance of median strips and traffic islands
On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:
- have a basic knowledge of the proper installation of signage, posts and footings, as well as hand rails and safety barriers
- be able to better determine sight distances for signage and set out signage and marker posts according to specified spacing and height requirements
- be able to install, clean and repair roadside amenities and maintain and repair median strips/traffic islands
