The cost effective acquisition and utilisation of plant and machinery are key considerations when managing civil construction projects.

This two day course covers procedures for the assessment of plant productivity, selection and allocation of vehicles and equipment for a project and the preparation and implementation of plant maintenance schedules.




Topics include:

  • Preparation of schedules for plant, equipment and vehicles
  • Maintenance - essential checks and maintenance procedures
  • Assessing viability of plant, equipment and vehicles
  • Scheduling plant, vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Determining plant productivity and replacement schedules
  • Establishing types of plant required for jobs/projects
  • Costing plant for hire or purchase
  • Factors influencing plant output
  • Utilisation of earthmoving, compaction equipment and other civil plant



On completion of this course participants will have the knowledge to:

  • Document and assess condition of plant
  • Establish a plant, equipment and vehicle replacement schedule
  • Assess contracts for the selection of plant
  • Calculate the cost, reliability and performance of plant
  • Determine maintenance requirements and manage maintenance tasks on plant and equipment



National Qualification information:

This course will address theoretical and knowledge requirements related to the below unit standards. It will not cover assessment and practical requirements unless specifically stated under course costs.

6436 - Inspect civil construction plant and equipment
6438 - Prepare civil construction plant, equipment and vehicle replacement schedule and recommendation
6439 - Prepare and implement civil plant, equipment and vehicle maintenance schedule
6440 - Assess the utilisation and productivity of civil plant, equipment and vehicles
6441 - Cost civil plant for purchase, lease or hire for a project
6464 - Manage civil plant and equipment
6469 - Maintain small plant and equipment on civil construction works
17326 (expiring) - Develop team and individual performance on civil construction works

Workshop staff and contract managers, supervisors, engineers and managers responsible for the allocation and economic operation of civil plant, vehicles and equipment
