Overview

Determining the right geotechnical tests required for the design of new pavement or rehabilitation is essential prior to selection of the pavement design type. This includes field and lab testing, selection of material to be used and any modifications required to the material to qualify them for use in the pavement structure. Cement stabilisation of the subbase and modification of the basecourse will help improve the quality of pavement and extend its life. 

Mechanistic pavement design will be introduced with applications using latest version of Circly program. Design will cover flexible (asphalt and granular pavement with stabilisation) and rigid (concrete) pavement for roads, industrial developments and container terminals. 

Pavement testing during construction will be introduced in the course to ensure that the pavement has been constructed as per the design and specifications. Inspection and testing plan (ITP) and Holdpoints for each pavement layer will be covered.

Presenter information

Ramiz Iskander has over 35 year experience in pavement investigation, failure assessment, design and construction monitoring. Ramiz has designed and reviewed over 300 roads across NZ, Fiji and Australia during his career. Ramiz is a BE Civil, CPEng and MIPENZ. Ramiz is the Director of Pavement Engineering Consultancy Ltd and previously was the national specialist for pavement and surfacing in MWH now part of Stantec and a review member of the National Pavement Technical Group (NPTG). He has been a pavement services manager for Beca Auckland for 8 years. He was involved in designing new motorways, expressways, road rehabilitation, intersection upgrades and road widening. Ramiz introduced structural asphalt to NZ in 1999 which was used for design of new motorways and arterial road rehabilitation and intersections. Ramiz is a promoter of recycling of existing pavement material to achieve a sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective solutions. Is also independent professional advisor (IPA) of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
